We all hope it will never happen to us but what would you do if the power went out for a fortnight in the middle of winter and you did not have a portable home generator? It is something we hope we will never experience but if you do get a home generator you will be prepared if ever anything does go wrong with the power supply.

Home generators come in various power rating sizes and most people simply choose to have a small backup generator to cover the essentials like keeping the furnace running and a couple of lights burning.

Most of us are prepared to allow a little discomfort if things go wrong with the power lines but no heat and no light would not be funny in winter. A basic backup portable home generator is not too expensive and is a small price to pay for the feeling of safety and security it gives you.

Don’t forget to store a supply of fuel for the generator in sealed cans and keep enough in a cool dry place outside of your home to last several days of running. You should never need it but boy, will you be glad you have it if ever you need your own power supply.

Make Sure Of Your Comfort On Riding Lawnmower

It may not be the first thing you think about but you comfort on riding lawnmower is important. Most ride on lawnmowers have a decent seat but there are other factors to consider as well such as seat height in relationship with the pedals and how close or how far it is from the steering wheel.

We are not all the same size so manufacturers of riding mowers try to allow for as many different shapes and sizes of people as they can but there are limits and each manufacturer will make different compromises between operability and comfort.

If you are different to average size either bigger or smaller, taller or shorter it is worth paying attention to how comfortable you might be. Most people who use a rideon yard mower will be sat there driving for a while so you need to be comfortable to avoid cramps and to be fully in control.

If you are unsure how comfortable you will be you should try some of your neighbors riding mowers to try them out for size and maybe even hire one for a weekend just to be sure it will suit your needs. It is quite a big investment to make in a ride on mower and you will most likely use it for several years so you want to get it right when you make your choice.

To the able bodied a mobility scooter is just a cute little vehicle but to anyone who is disabled or unable to walk mobility scooters help people enjoy life much better because it gives them freedom to get out and visit people and places.

Most of us are unaware, until it happens to us, how some people are trapped in their homes by a lack of mobility. If you can’t walk far or even at all you cannot easily get anywhere on your own. With a mobility scooter you can suddenly do so much more than look out of a window to see what is happening in the world.

The sense of release and freedom mobility scooters give people who may not have left their home for months is hard to describe and it is important that the able bodied understand this. Most disability mobility scooters are purchased by family members for their fathers and mothers so unless they understand the benefits mobility scooters can bring it is unlikely they will think of getting one for their parents.

The message is simple. Mobility scooters help people enjoy life and give the disabled mobility and freedom. Make sure you tell your kids.

When most people think of aroma therapy candles they think of some of the more commonly available types based on quite well known essential plant oils but there are many more lesser known types of essential oils used in some of the high quality aroma therapy candles available.

Ranging from Basil, which is said to help by giving an up lifting feeling, energizing, refreshing and clarifying to Yiang Yiang oils which are supposed to make you feel sensual and even euphoric and there are dozens of essential oils in between these two.

All the different oils are said to have different benefits when you breathe them in from burning an aromatherapy oils and candles containing the different oils and scents. So, there is something for every mood and occasion.

Some of the more exotic oils are rather more expensive but a candle lasts quite a long time so you do get great value for money. You should also watch out for the more manufactured and mass produced oil based aromatherapy candles as these will often contain lower quality extracts or even imitation oils.

We all love the natural light of aromatherapy candles as well as the benefits we are said to gain so try some and see how it works for you. The relaxation provided by the gentle candle light helps straight away and you may find the aromas of the essential oils is good for you too.

It is beginning to feel like spring is with us and with the spring comes thoughts of summer days in the sunshine. It will be very welcome after a long cold winter and I am thinking of buying some quality patio furniture to enjoy those lazy summer days.

There are several types of patio furniture but I am thinking about either a hardwood patio set or possibly a cast iron patio table and chairs. Both of these materials are weather resistant and should last many years and if the patio furniture set I buy is built to last I will want to make sure the style I choose will be a style still enjoy in ten years time.

One of the penalties of purchasing good quality furniture for your garden is that because it lasts so well you need to be sure you will still want it in several years time. I will probably go for a fairly standard style of wrought Iron metal patio furniture which I expect will last long enough to be passed on to my children when I move along to the great patio in the sky.

It must be a man thing, though I am sure plenty of women would enjoy driving a riding mower too. We become like big kids when we think about the purchase of a new lawnmower and rather than being sensible and practicle as we usually are we go all childlike and decide that it would be great fun to drive a riding mower round and round our yard.

Most of drive cars so it isn’t like we have never driven before. You can understand a child who has never had the chance to drive a powered vehicle before wanting to drive a ride on lawnmower but why do we adults get excited at the thought? It is all very peculiar but it is a fact of life. We all want a riding lawnmower.

So should you buy a rideon lawnmower? It depends on if you have the money, you have a yard or garden big enough to be able to operate one and if you have somewhere secure to keep it safe. If you have all those things then you have enough reason to purchase a riding mower if you feel the need.

There seems to be little doubt that some of us are more susceptible to depression than others. Why that should be is an unknown but since we are all different we should not be surprised. Some people are good at business, others are great athletes and some of us have to live with depression.

If we accept that it is something within us that does not mean we cannot manage it and live with depression deep within us but not appearing to affect our day to day lives. We can find ways to help us cope and there is depression help available to give support and treatment when needed.

I have experienced depression at several different stages of life and each time it has been hard for me and hard for those around me. People with no knowledge of the condition try to be helpful by saying you should ‘pull your finger out’ and ‘get on with life’ but that is not very helpful.

My own feelings on my own depression are that I am fine when things are going reasonably well but lack of confidence in myself or the knowledge on how to improve things leaves me feeling inadequate and pathetic. I can see no way of dealing with the problems I face so I tend to shut down and try to ignore the rest of the world. I guess it is a sort of self protection mechanism but I can’t say it really solves the problem.

The problem of depression and discussing how to treat the condition is that logic does not play a very large role in the situation. Yes I can see the logic of ‘pulling myself together’ but I don’t know how to achieve that. When you feel so bad it is so hard to take positive action to improve your situation. Financial problems often trigger depression and it is no great surprise that people who are struggling to survive financially should feel overwhelmed by the stress of trying to cope with a life and financial system that is complicated and where the details are considered important. When you are suffering with depression the details are things you find difficult to cope with.

When you are experiencing depression you view the world in a different way to other people, and differently to the way you would view it when you are feeling fine. Everything seems like a huge problem and doing the smallest tasks seems overwhelming. Building confidence in your own abilities seems crucial and I have found that by making small progress each day I can rebuild my self confidence and that seems to help me feel better.

If you find yourself overwhelmed by everything you feel you should be doing and consequently unable to do anything, try to focus on one small task each day. It may be something simple like putting out the trash or filling the washing machine. Do that one task and allow yourself to feel pleased about having done something. Yes, it is a small thing but it is a positive thing. Give yourself a pat on the back and feel pleased that rather than doing nothing, you got something done.

Small steps build your confidence and your belief in yourself. Each day you are reinforcing the positives and helping yourself to feel better about yourself. We may have to live with depression but we can also learn what helps us recover from it and get through it. For me these small positive steps are a sign that I am not as bad as I sometimes think and I can achieve more.

I guess I should just point out that none of this is medical advice. I am not a doctor these are my own thoughts and feelings and experiences of depression. If you feel that you or a loved one is suffering from depression you should visit your doctor and get a qualified medical opinion and treatment. Just visiting the doctor and admitting to your problems can be a great relief and with proper treatment things should get better.

After the disappointing opening race in Bahrain a fortnight ago there were plenty who were concerned that the rules changes for 2010 with no refueling might have been a mistake. Nothing much happened there in what proved to be a rather dull processional race.

What a difference a bit of rain makes. In Australia the weather was changeable and rain just moments before the start was due led to all the drivers opting for intermediate rain tyres and the rain played a significant role in making a classic grand prix.

So now we have had two extremes of the rather dull and boring race in the middle east and the exciting racing we saw today in Melbourne. The major differences would seem to be the track and the weather. Rain always makes for an interesting race because of the unpredictability but no one seems to have expected all the overtaking we saw taking place.

Perhaps if it had been a dry race things would have turned out different so we cannot say for sure that the new requirement of no refueling will not produce other dull races over the season but we have had one thing proved to us. F1 motor racing can still be very exciting to watch.

Let’s hope the next race, next weekend in Malaysia, proves to be as exciting and fascinating a race as this one.

Well done Jenson Button. Brilliant drive and outstanding decision to pit early for dry tyres. Well done Melbourne. The race was a classic.

I have always been a science fiction fan. As a child I read fascinating stories of space exploration and of unimaginable worlds a billion light years away. A lot of what I read remains beyond imagination at this time and will perhaps always be beyond the realms of what is possible for humans to ever see.

What is striking is how much of what was science fiction is now science fact. Think back to when you first saw Star Trek and how remarkable the idea that you could communicate with people thousands of miles away with a tiny hand held communicator. This was from a time before the mobile cell phone had appeared and even before we had wireless phones in the home.

The first time I saw someone using a mobile phone outdoors I felt the need to stand and watch, it was such an amazing thing to see. Now mobile communication is so commonplace we have people twittering from the train, from their foreign travels and even from the International Space Station. The world has changed.

One of the great but terrifying themes of science fiction was of a type of robot killer machine gone mad. Maybe gone mad is inaccurate. The truth is that computers do what they are programmed to do so a robot that goes on a killing spree is only doing what it was told to do. Programming has always been as much art as it is science and occasional glitches in the coding lead to unexpected consequences and this an accepted fact among most programmers. You cannot build 100% reliable code as there may always be some certain set of circumstance that cause the software to react unexpectedly in a situation that was not expected or planned for.

The growth in computer powered robot war machines has been remarkable in the last decade. When the Iraq war began there were no robot war machines involved. Seven years on there are said to be around 12,000. The current crop of machines are usually controlled directly via a satellite link from somewhere miles, sometimes thousands of miles, away from the scene of the action. How much easier it must leave your conscience feeling if all you do is go to work and kill a blip on a screen. It turns the dirty reality of killing human beings into the carefree world of the computer game. Killing images on a screen is easy and not having to see fear and death in another man’s eyes makes it much easier to kill more people without worrying since all you killed was a blip of light on a screen.

The potential risk to mankind and human morals of these fly by wire drones is one thing but the next stage of development promises something even more troubling.

Apparently there is a problem with the bad guys, which presumably means someone you don’t agree with, trying to interfere with your plans of wreaking death and destruction on them and their families. It appears they have had some success with interfering with the signals used to control the pilotleess drones and reduced the effectiveness of the weapon platform so the next stage is the semi autonomous machine that can make it’s own judgment calls and attack what it sees as a target.

If you are looking for a tank it may be reasonably easy to identify it but how do you select between a shepherd carrying a large stick and a terrorist carrying a gun? The potential risk of picking either the wrong man as a target or simply choosing both to be on the safe side is very worrying if you have any plans to be a shepherd or happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

War has become a very political issue and wars are, it seems, won or lost on the basis of the number of body bags returning home. People are less willing to simply accept the political arguments for war and feel they should have more say in when wars take place and why. No longer do we just accept the huge numbers of dead we saw daily in the First World War. It is unthinkable now that thousands of young men could be killed every single day for years. It did happen back then and the war of attrition only ended when both sides had wasted a whole generation of young men.

The new developments in robot war machines could solve that problem with autonomous robot warriors sent into the field to kill anything that moves. No longer would politicians have to face up to the risk that they could be sending their young men and women into jeopardy. No longer would they have to convince their troops they were fighting for a just cause. Simply send in the robot soldiers and let them wreak havoc on the chosen opposition.

We all want to avoid the loss of life that wars cause. Nobody in their right mind wants our soldiers to die but neither should we be too quick to decide that other people with alternative views and attitudes should die either. An army of robot warriors allows for the possibility that wars could be started and decided on purely financial grounds with little fear of the consequences at home. It seems like a dangerous place to be if the wrong people get into power and have command of such an army.

Once you have people with that sort of power what would you do to stop them if they decided to wage war on their home country? Revolution is rather more difficult when you need to convince your troops you are doing the right thing. If you had an army of robot soldiers at your command you would need to convince no-one. Just push a button and revolution would begin. Dictatorship at the press of a button would be very appealing to some people who feel they know better than the ordinary voter what is right or wrong.

We all want to have the military with the best chance of winning a war. It has always been that way. The country, or person, with the most powerful weapons and army usually seems to win. It is what took us from using sticks and stones to fight with on to having modern aircraft, tanks and nuclear bombs. It’s great to have an advantage but what will happen if everybody has an army of super robot warriors? How would we decide on the winner of a war between robot armies and what would stop the winning robot warriors simply marching all the way to the enemy’s capital city and wiping every living person off the face of the planet?

What would happen if the robots decided that fighting each other was pointless since the cause of the problem was actually the humans who had sent them into battle? It’s a scenario rather reminiscent of the film Terminator and it is starting to display signs of possible science present rather than science fiction. Those who develop such technologies will assure us this could never happen but they would say that wouldn’t they? How can they be so sure? We are not talking about dumb robots here. We are talking about robots programmed to make a judgment and make life or death decisions for themselves. They would certainly need to communicate with each other to decide if another robot was friend or foe so maybe they would just decide robots were friends and the humans were the enemy.

How would you deal with the prospect of a robot warrior walking up your garden path and telling you that in the name of efficiency and to avoid the risk of what you might do in the future, you and your family were about to be slaughtered?

Yes, it is a little far fetched and yes we all want to avoid our military personnel being put in harms way but this robot can of worms is not something we can avoid thinking about because it is inconvenient.

The reason people try very hard to avoid wars is to avoid loss of life but developing self regulating and somewhat self aware robot war machines could just possibly lead to either a greater risk to democracy or the end of human life as we know it. Have a great day, while you can.

So after all the build up to what was expected to be the most exciting season of F1 grand prix racing in decades we finally had the Bahrain grand prix and everyone yawned and fell asleep.

It had all the potential with four previous world championship winners racing, four top teams who all had pretty good cars and rule changes that require all the teams to run the whole length of the race on one tank of fuel meaning the drivers would have to drive more intelligently to both conserve fuel and tyes.

It all sounded good on paper but the reality proved rather different. The tyres seem not to be a major issue and the concerns before the race that the first set of tyres could be ruined within the first couple of laps proved unfounded and the extra weight of the cars from the start apparently not a major problem.

The race was decided more by qualifying position that race craft thanks to the difficulties of anyone overtaking anyone else thanks to the airflow problems caused as soon as a car gets too close to the car in front.

It seems that every year the problem of airflow over the cars is an issue which prevents the following cars getting close enough to overtake and it is a problem that must surely be addressed. If the authorities were to stop pussy-footing around and ban the big wings both front and rear that would surely make the races more challenging for the drivers and more interesting for spectators.

I guess there is a risk that there would be more crashes but surely the drivers job is to drive at a speed suitable for the car and avoid crashes regardless of whether they have wings on the cars or not.

Something needs to be done or it is likely that only the keenest of enthusiasts will be left watching come the end of the season if Bahrain is an example of what we can expect.
